It’s official. I have an internship for spring quarter.
I couldn’t be happier that I am working with Key Blue Prints Inc. in Columbus for my internship this quarter. Friday March 30th was my first day on the job. I met with Cheryl Frizzell about working with her company for the quarter. It was a long day but I really enjoyed meeting everyone that works with the company.
On Friday, I helped out the mailroom staff with a huge mailing that came in from the Ohio Democratic Association. There was an issue with how the letters were held together. So we were assigned to put one sticker on each side of the letters. It took a few hours, but we got close to 2,000 letters stuck with stickers and sent back out in the mail.
After working with the mailroom staff, it was around 2:00pm. I then worked with my supervisor for the last hour of work. She has me doing office work for now while I get used to the company and the employees. I got a lot of filing done in that last hour of work.
I am feeling really confident about this internship. I can do this. I am strong.
Working towards an Architectural & Mechanical Design degree has to be one of the single most complicated things I have ever done in my life. After numerous hours in the CAD lab and spending sleepless nights doing paperwork, I am beginning the long search for a real life big girl drafting job.
As a first year, I thought it would be simple to locate a job after graduation. I began my search a few weeks ago and have made no progress what so ever. After searching the Internet, newspapers, and just about everywhere else…nothing. I have sent numerous resumes to companies all over the state of Ohio and even a drafting firm in Pennsylvania.
I have read what feels like a million Craigslist posts for “entry level” drafts(wo)men. I’ve noticed they all have one thing in common…you have to have some sort of experience. So let me get this straight, you have to have experience to gain experience? Is that correct? I’ve questioned this theory so many times in the past while looking at job postings on the Internet. I have only found one company who is looking for a summer intern in a few months and they only require a valid drivers license, clean driving record, and a high school diploma. Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner!
So, I am slowly learning how to communicate with future employers and what they are trying to find in a new and upcoming employee. Hopefully everything works out in the near future.
